Understand visitor behaviour in your physical environment

WHAT?

While online marketers have successfully mastered audience analytics, their detailed methods have yet to fully transfer to real-world environments. Until now.

Our technology lets you understand visitor behaviour in physical spaces – whether that be at live events, brand experiences, trade exhibitions, retail spaces, transport hubs or any number of other event environments.

We passively capture footfall, engagement, dwell time, impact, frequency, and journey paths, providing you with a clear picture of people’s behaviour.

This allows you to visualise visitors’ journeys in and around your space, helping you to optimise its layout – including where to position key points of interest, facilities, and brand materials.

HOW?

In today’s digital environment, everybody turns up to events with connectivity in their pocket. We use smartphones – and the ‘pings’ they send out as they search for available Wi-Fi networks – as a proxy for people.

Meshh sensors gather these Wi-Fi signals from visitors’ mobile devices. Then we log time, distance and MAC ID (in a secure, fully GDPR-compliant way), before collating visitor information in real time on our live dashboard.

And because our sensors are discreet, they can be deployed throughout event spaces to gather information on specific areas – including entrances and exits, points of interest, venue facilities, marketing and experiential zones – and used to trace visitor journey patterns and hotspots.

WHY?

Brands and property owners need an accurate, reliable way to measure the success of their events. Attendance counts and overall sales totals are no longer enough. If marketers want to continue to refine their activations – and prove the value of their work too – then they need deeper insight.

The information our technology provides can be used to:

  • Improve event planning and space design
  • Measure engagement with event assets
  • Illustrate to sponsors and advertisers how much exposure their brand achieves
  • Demonstrate ROI to stakeholders and commercial partners
  • Provide a benchmark for future events and activations, and much more

In being able to deliver real-time, objective data on footfall, movement and engagement for any physical space, Meshh technology delivers the robust insights that brands, event planners and marketers need to keep growing and improving.

FAQS

We know you will have lots of questions so please give us a call, however here are some of the most common things we get asked.

Meshh use smart devices as a proxy for people. Wi-Fi enabled smart devices continually search for new Wi-Fi networks to join, whether they're already connected to an active Wi-Fi network or not. Each search (probe request) for a new Wi-Fi network, is captured by our sensors, alongside signal strength and the device's unique ID, which we encrypt to ensure GDPR compliance.

We identify unique devices and their distance from the sensor. This enables us to measure how engaged visitors are in a space (using time and distance), how long they've been there for, how many times they've returned to the space and what their journey through the space has been (within the context of the sensors).

We use time and distance (which we determine from the signal strength of the device as it searches for Wi-Fi) to define engagement. As standard, we class engaged visitors as those who have been within 5m of the sensor for at least 30 seconds, whilst passers-by are classed as those seen between 5 and 10m from the sensor.

We can configure these distances in line with the environment and what engagement looks like in that space. The conversion rate, which is the ratio between these two metrics is a powerful indicator of an experience or zone's ability to convert passing footfall.

Yes, we can measure dwell time from the number of probe requests we capture from a device on each sensor.

Meshh can identify individual devices (in a completely GDPR compliant way), so can recognise devices as they pass within range of different sensors. As such, we can deliver aggregated movement patterns, showing how visitors move around a space.

We can also recognise when a device shows up in a different location - like a retail store after being seen at a brand activation. This can provide a whole new layer of insight into the effectiveness of experiential activity and its ability to drive footfall to brick and mortar stores.

No. Meshh use a one-way hashing function to encrypt each device's MAC address (it's unique identifier). This happens at the edge (at the sensor) rather than in the cloud for maximum security. The data Meshh collects is completely anonymous and used to provide insight into visitor behaviour trends in a space, rather than identifying individual visitors.

Meshh can only identify devices that have their Wi-Fi enabled so do not count 100% of people in a space. Rather we deliver insight into visitor behaviour patterns based upon the data collected (which is significantly higher than other technologies in this space).

As part of our 'special sauce' we apply algorithms to remove event staff and static devices (CCTV, printers, computers) from the data to ensure only those devices belonging to visitors are counted.

No, Meshh use a completely passive data collection methodology. Visitors simply need to have their Wi-Fi enabled; they don't need to connect to the Wi-Fi or download an app. As such, we collect a far larger data set than other technologies in this space.

No, the sensors do not omit a signal and simply listen passively for Wi-Fi probe requests from smart devices.

With a travel-sized and compact design, our portable hardware is small enough to place in any discreet environment.

2.91 x 2.64 x 0.87 in. (74 x 67 x 23mm)

Yes, all our sensors require power from either from a portable battery pack or mains power. The duration of the campaign and availability of plug sockets will dictate which power solution.

Clients are given their own login to access our dynamic dashboard, which operates in near real time. You will also be able to export the data in csv, pdf, jpg or xls formats.

For more bespoke research into how visitors use your space, our Research and Insight team can deliver tailored research reports for your team.

Yes. Meshh have deployed in over 20 countries to date, across the Americas, Europe, Asia and Australia.

Meshh offers training for your team to carry out deployments yourself or our technicians can install and offer any onsite support throughout the activation.

Meshh offers clients both the option to buy and reuse the hardware or rent for one-off activations.

The range for a visitor to your space is completely customisable from a 2.5m radius to a 30m radius, however this decreases if there are walls and/or any other obstacles in between. The sensors can capture probe requests from devices up to 100m away, however this is dependent upon environment. We class devices captured at maximum range as Total Reach, which is a great indicator of the total audience in a space.

Yes, our sensors work outside however we do advise that they are placed inside a protective case to shield them from the elements.

The sensors are splash proof but not fully submersible. We advise that sensors are placed inside a protective bag to ensure they’re suitable for all weather conditions.

The number of sensors required vary based on the KPI’s and the size of the area. With dimensions of the activation and/or a floor plan we can work with you to determine the appropriate number of sensors to be deployed. A single sensor can easily cover a 40x40m space.

Meshh sensors have their own connectivity via a 4G M2M dongle meaning we don't require access to Wi-Fi. In fact, the sensors operate completely independent of the existing infrastructure, making them perfect for temporary events.

Meshh take data privacy very seriously and are completely GDPR compliant.

When the Meshh sensor collects the MAC address it does not store it or any personally identifiable information (PII).

On collection, SHA256 a one-way, one-to-one hashing algorithm (from the family of hash algorithms designed by the NSA) is applied and the hash replaces the MAC address almost immediately. The MAC address is discarded and completely forgotten.

The data is then encrypted and transmitted to our cloud based application for processing. Once the hashed data is processed, all data is aggregated and anonymous.

We encrypt each device address with a one-way hashing function to protect privacy of visitors. We process the captured data on remote cloud servers to generate reports. Meshh may collect data/information from your (“data provider’s”) mobile phone when you visit any environment where Meshh sensors are deployed. Such information/data may include:

1)  MAC Address of the Mobile Phone;

2)  Signal strength of the Mobile Phone;

3)  Mobile Phone Manufacturer
